The Toledo Rockets have been a mainstay atop the charts of the MAC over the past few seasons. Part of that is thanks to head coach Jason Candle, but a large portion of the Rockets’ success has been directly correlated to starting quarterback Dequan Finn.
However, when the Rockets took the field against Wyoming in the Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl, Finn was noticeably absent.
What Happened to Dequan Finn?
Finn, who led the Rockets to back-to-back MAC Championship appearances, hit the transfer portal following the 2023 regular season. As he weighs his options inside the portal, Finn was scheduled to be unavailable for action against Wyoming.
Throughout his career, Finn was the epitome of excellence as a dual-threat option for the Rockets. He accumulated 63 career passing touchdowns and 25 scores on the ground.
Finn finished his Toledo career with 7,070 passing yards, 1,836 rushing yards, and a 10-yard reception back in 2021. That gave Finn a total of 8,916 total yards as the starting quarterback for Toledo over five seasons.
He’ll transfer with a year left of eligibility, as his dual-threat and veteran presence should be coveted. Finn also hasn’t apparently ruled out a return to Toledo.
Who Starts In Place of Finn for Toledo?
For the Arizona Bowl, the Rockets turned to a familiar face: Tucker Gleason. The 6’3″, 235-pound Gleason is no stranger to the action with Toledo, throwing for 12 touchdowns over the past two seasons and even starting games in the lead-up to the 2022 MAC Championship appearance in Finn’s absence.
Gleason is a dual-threat in his own right, giving Toledo very little change to their offensive scheme when he starts. He’s a bruising back on the ground and has shown the ability to hit every level of the field with nearly as much accuracy as Finn possessed during hist time with the program.
