American sportscaster and former football coach Urban Meyer has urged Notre Dame Fighting Irish coach Marcus Freeman to stay put in the college football landscape. On Monday, Dec. 8, a video was posted by @awfulannouncing on X/Twitter, featuring Meyer’s recent appearance on analyst Colin Cowherd’s “The Herd” show.
Cowherd asked Meyer for his thoughts on Freeman being reportedly offered by NFL teams to make the jump and coach in the professional league. Meyer opined that Freeman should stay in collegiate football, arguing that Freeman would have more leverage there, in terms of team personnel, compared to being part of an NFL franchise.
“ Marcus is my friend, he did not ask me, but I would say you stay in college 100%. You have controllables in college as a head coach, and the NFL I thought just, there’s so many uncontrollables that you don’t have, you know. Whether it’s the GM, the, you know, you have an owner, you have all kinds of things. In college, it’s you, Marcus Freeman at Notre Dame. Now, he has great support from the AD and the president, et cetera, et cetera,” Meyer shared.
“But Marcus Freeman, as I found out, you give up so much when you take that next step and so much that’s out of your control and plus, you’re gonna lose in the NFL. It’s built, and I’m not sure Marcus, the Marcus I know, he can’t take losing, like I can’t take losing,” he added.

Coach Freeman and his 2025 Fighting Irish roster finished their campaign with an overall record of 10-2, and they did not participate in any national conference. They will decline any offer to play in a postseason bowl game as they are setting their sights on possibly winning the 2026 national championship. Notre Dame was not included in the teams competing in postseason play.

While Unsure Of An NCAA Title, Urban Meyer Believes Marcus Freeman Will Always Win In College
In the same interview, Urban Meyer reinforced his take on coach Marcus Freeman to stay with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish as he believes that the program can consistently log in winning seasons under his tutelage.
However, Meyer also mentioned that he is still unsure on whether or not Notre Dame can take the next step and win a national title.
“ You’re gonna win at Notre Dame. Now, are you gonna win the national title? I don’t know. But look at their schedule, he is gonna play a season every year where he is favored in at least nine or 10 of those games, maybe more. That doesn’t happen at the next level,” Meyer claimed.
