Three-time national championship-winning college coach Urban Meyer revealed on the Triple Option Podcast what teams should look for when watching players at the NFL Combine.

Urban Meyers’ Keys for NFL Success
Meyer won titles with the Florida Gators in 2006 and 2008 and the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2014.
Meyer said, “Yeah, I’m not a big, you know, who can bench the most, who can do this that don’t, don’t say that’s not important, because that is it is important. I think you also have to look at how he was coached.”
He went on to say that a player from a poorly coached program will need to be given more room for growth as he enters the NFL.
Players who have played for programs like Ohio State or Alabama — especially under Nick Saban from 2007 to 2024 — will likely be well-coached.
Mark Ingram was one such player who played in Alabama with Saban from 2008-2010. Meyer said, “You better appreciate what you got because he’s been coached hard. He’s been taught the right fundamentals.”
Meyer’s Analysis on Running Backs
Meyer said that running backs should be evaluated based on whether he will “stick his nose on you in pass protection.”
Meyer continued, “Will he come out of the backfield? Will he understand a complicated offensive scheme? Those are all high-value marks in the NFL Draft for that.”

Players must also evaluate whether they can learn and execute a complicated offensive scheme.
