The Oklahoma Sooners recently added 63-year-old offensive assistant Kevin Wilson to the coaching staff.
Nobody is more thrilled for Wilson than his former colleague Urban Meyer, who he coached with at Ohio State.

Meyer’s Thoughts On the Hire
Wilson spent six seasons under Urban Meyer and Ryan Day at Ohio State as either the offensive coordinator or the tight ends coach from 2017-22.
Meyer recently spoke with insider Colton Sulley about Wilson joining the staff.
What was Urban Meyer’s first reaction to reports of Kevin Wilson returning to the #Sooners?
“I can’t think of a better guy.”
“He’s arguably the best practice coach I’ve had.”

What Meyer said is the definition of a vote of confidence for his former assistant.
With Oklahoma looking to stake its claim as a true contender in the SEC, this move makes a ton of sense for many reasons.
Wilson’s Long Coaching History
The Sooners are adding a coach who has worked in many different capacities throughout his college football career.
Wilson started out as a graduate assistant at the University of North Carolina back in 1984. Aside from coaching at Fred T. Foard High School in 1989, he would go on to coach offense for the next four decades at places like Miami of Ohio and Northwestern.
He also had a previous stint at Oklahoma as the team’s offensive coordinator from 2002-2010. A key cog in the wheel for former head coach Bob Stoops, Wilson helped the Sooners win 10+ games seven times, along with six Big 12 titles.
This would lead to him getting the head-coaching job at Indiana before landing at Ohio State. More recently, he was the head coach at Tulsa from 2023-2024, which is all the more reason why Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables wanted to hire him. Not only does he have ties to the program, but he was the head coach of an in-state rival.

After winning 10 games in 2023, the Sooners went just 6-7 in their first season in the SEC.
The addition of Wilson should both help Venables feel at ease with another former head coach in the building while also breathing new life into an offense from that of an experienced coach’s point of view.
