Urban Meyer Shares Why He’s Staying with Fox Sports Instead of Returning to Coaching

Recently appearing on the “Another Dooley Noted Podcast,” Meyer discussed a couple of things, including why he believes the Big 10 has passed the SEC, and why he’s much more satisfied on the sidelines with Fox Sports rather than coaching.

“To me, I’ve reached the point in my life where I want to do what I want to do where I want to do it, and most importantly, who I do it with,” Meyer explained.

“Fox is like — I always use the term family because I can’t wait to do it. It’s a lot of travel. It occupies a lot of time, but I’m also with family.” Meyer explained, also offering up his real family as another reason for his coaching retirement.

“It gives me a chance to go somewhere, and then I’ll fly to see the grandkids. So I really enjoy it. We’re on-site at big games, and I don’t like it, I love it. As long as they’ll have me, I’ll do it.”

Urban Meyer Believes Big Ten Has Surpassed SEC

While on the podcast, Meyer also discussed how the Big Ten has potentially passed the SEC in terms of talent, with Michigan and Ohio State winning the last two National Championships.

“Well, you know what the SEC’s done? It’s raised the level, but the Big Ten has passed the SEC in the upper part. If you had told me that 10 years ago, I would’ve said it’s not even close. Because it’s not.”  Meyer explained.

“When I first got to the Big Ten, even Shelley said, ‘What in the world? This is a slow man’s game up here,’ and I like to think that the Buckeyes really changed that. Then everyone else started investing in their schools,” he continued.

“And started recruiting the best player, not just the footprint. As a result, the Wolverine team two years ago was one of the best teams I’ve seen. The Buckeyes team this year is one of the best I’ve ever seen. You’re seeing Penn State, and some of these teams have great success.”

“But still, that middle to the bottom, it’s the SEC by far. You’ve got eight teams, nine teams in the SEC that think they can go win a national title, no other conference has ever had that.”
