Big-name coaching hires usually bring excitement, especially when a legend like Bill Belichick joins a program. But at the University of North Carolina, his arrival has sparked mixed feelings.
With millions flowing into athletics, UNC is also making deep cuts to academic programs and raising student fees, leaving many to wonder: is success on the field coming at the expense of education? Now, the debate centers around a situation where the university is paying more but getting less in return.

Bill Belichick’s UNC Deal Raises Eyebrows Amid Academic Cuts and Fee Hikes
With less than 100 days until North Carolina kicks off against TCU, one big question hangs in the air: Can Bill Belichick succeed in college football?
He’s considered the greatest NFL coach of all time, but the college game is different. Recruiting, NIL deals, and the transfer portal are all part of a fast-changing system. And for someone like Belichick, who’s spent decades in the pros, this world is completely new.

His hiring also came quickly after Mack Brown’s exit, which didn’t exactly end on a smooth note. To make things more complicated, headlines are just as focused on Belichick’s personal life with longtime partner Jordon Hudson as they are on his coaching plans. Naturally, fans are wondering how all of this will play out.
Still, Belichick has strong backing from UNC, both financially and academically. His arrival is shaking up the entire campus. Reports say the football budget is set to jump by at least $8 million, adding to the current $40 million. His contract alone is believed to top $10 million per year, putting him among the highest-paid coaches in college football.
But all of this spending comes during a painful moment for UNC. As reported by Wral News, the university is planning to cut $100 million from its academic budget by 2026–27. That includes $53 million in faculty positions being cut.
It’s difficult to overlook the correlation between the university’s decision to cut millions from academics and the football coach’s soaring salary. Former coach Mack Brown voiced concerns about these shifting priorities.
He said, “They’ve committed money to it, they’ve helped him with academics. They’ve lowered those standards some.” This shows many worry North Carolina might be compromising academics for football success.
Alongside this, UNC’s NIL budget jumped from $4 million to $20 million since Belichick’s arrival. This boost makes UNC a stronger player in recruiting. But it also raises tough questions about what the school values more—athletics or academics.
Students are already feeling the pressure. Out-of-state tuition is rising by $46 million. Faculty worry that fewer professors will mean larger classes, fewer courses, and weaker research programs.
While UNC leaders claim these cuts aim to enhance long-term stability, many perceive a shift in the school’s focus from education to entertainment.

UNC is going all-in on football. The school is pouring in money, aiming for success on the field. But at the same time, academic programs are being cut. Tuition is rising, and students are feeling the strain.
Amid all this, the real question remains—who benefits from this investment, and who pays the price?
