Georgia has been the most dominant force in college football over the last two seasons, but could cracks be forming in their championship bid? While Kirby Smart has proven he can win with the best roster, one UGA insider is now questioning whether he can secure a title without having the undisputed top team in the nation.
He acknowledges that no other team has clearly established itself as the best yet, but he believes Georgia isn’t as overwhelming as it once was.

Georgia’s Playoff Future in Jeopardy as Insider Thinks Kirby Smart Doesn’t Have the Best Team This Season
Georgia’s dominance under Kirby Smart has been clear. They were the top team in college football for the past three seasons. In 2022 and 2023, they won back-to-back national championships. But as the 2025 season approaches, things look different. We can’t say for sure that Kirby Smart has the best team this year.
Dean Legge, a trusted insider on “UGA Football’s Dawg Post,” shared some doubts.
He asked, “What I wonder is, can Kirby win the national championship without the best team? Because he’s proven he can win the national championship with the best team. Some coaches can’t do that, to be honest with you. That happens. But can he go and win the national championship with a team that is not the best team in college football?”
Legge isn’t convinced that Georgia is the top program this year. However, he admits it’s hard to give the benefit of the doubt to a clear favorite. No other team seems ready to take that crown either.
He added, “Here’s the caveat. I don’t know who the best team in college football is. It could be Georgia. Doesn’t seem like it, but it doesn’t seem like anybody else is really knocking the door down to take that crown, if you want to call it that, right now either.”
The issue is that teams like Texas, Ohio State, and even Oregon are recruiting at an elite level. He noted that both programs have new starting quarterbacks, which could create challenges.
Georgia, Ohio State, and Texas remain among the best recruiting powerhouses, yet uncertainty lingers about whether any of them are truly dominant enough to separate from the pack this season.
Legge’s main concern isn’t whether Georgia can compete—they definitely can. He also doesn’t count them out. He pointed out that Texas might have the best overall roster. Yet, Texas still faces tough road games against Ohio State and Georgia. Those matchups could decide if Texas stays in playoff contention.

No matter how it plays out, Dean Legge feels a nervous energy around Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs this season. It’s clear they’re ready to fight, but the path won’t be easy.
