Former Alabama RB Trey Sanders Transfers to TCU

Former Alabama running back Trey Sanders transfers to TCU as the former five-star recruit looks to get an injury-addled CFB career back on track.

On-field success at the 2023 College Football National Championship is yet to be determined for the TCU Horned Frogs, but that hasn’t stopped them from getting a win in the transfer portal with the commitment of former Alabama RB Trey Sanders.

Trey Sanders Transfers to TCU

Sanders’ commitment to TCU bolsters a running back room that is set to lose Kendre Miller to the 2023 NFL Draft. Miller rushed for 1,399 yards and 17 touchdowns during the 2022 college football season, pacing a rushing offense that averaged 5.3 yards per carry and 2.3 touchdowns per game on their way to the College Football National Championship.

While landing the former five-star recruit of the 2019 recruiting class gives TCU a powerful back who also boasts excellent cut ability and running back vision to create yardage for himself, the move allows Sanders to finally establish himself as the top-level college football rusher that was promised coming out of the prestigious IMG Academy in Florida.

Sanders’ career has been beset by injury. He was unable to contribute at all as a freshman in 2019, receiving a medical redshirt due to what head coach Nick Saban described as “pretty significant” injuries. He was just beginning to establish himself in the Alabama backfield in 2020 when a hip injury sustained during a car accident curtailed his redshirt-freshman campaign.

The now-TCU running back had the best season of his college career in 2021, rushing for 314 yards and two touchdowns while showcasing some pass-catching prowess with six receptions for 55 yards. However, Sanders fell out of favor behind incoming transfer Jahmyr Gibbs this season, tallying just 14 carries for 80 yards and a touchdown before entering the transfer portal toward the end of November.

TCU has been successful in luring talent from Tuscaloosa to Fort Worth in the current college football transfer portal window. Sanders joins former Alabama teammates Tommy Brockermeyer and JoJo Earle with the Horned Frogs. The fairy-tale team of the 2022 college football season is becoming an appetizing location under Sonny Dykes.
