Trev Alberts Targeted by Texas A&M Aggies for Vacant Athletic Director Role

According to multiple reports, Texas A&M is closing in on former Nebraska All-American Trev Alberts for its vacant athletic director position.

After losing former athletic director Ross Bjork to the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Texas A&M Aggies are targeting another sitting Big Ten athletic director for its vacant position, according to a report from Billy Liucci of TexAgs.

Per Liucci, and several others, the Aggies are set to hire Nebraska’s Trev Alberts as their new athletics director, a move seen within the industry as a strong hire.

Texas A&M Targeting Trev Alberts as Next AD

After a nearly two-month search, the Aggies seem to be winding down and have set their sights on Trev Alberts, a three-year athletic director and Nebraska alum.

Alberts is well-acquainted with college football as he was an All-American linebacker and Butkus Award winner at Nebraska in the early 1990s. He was drafted fifth overall by the Colts in 1994, but had his career cut short by injuries. Upon retirement, Alberts became an analyst for both the NFL and college football.

When Alberts left Nebraska in 1994 — after graduating in just three years — he did so as the school record holder for tackles for loss and sacks, and his 273 tackles still rank ninth in Cornhusker history.

Alberts was previously the athletic director for Nebraska-Omaha, overseeing the school’s transition to Division I before moving to his alma mater in 2021.

Alberts is known as one of the more willing spenders among top athletic directors. He led a unique initiative to compensate student-athletes with high GPAs when Name, Image, and Likeness rules went into effect in 2021.

He was also at the forefront of a massive facilities upgrade for the football team, which is scheduled to open this fall and will include academic, nutritional, and life skills services for all student-athletes.

Alberts will join a Texas A&M administration at a bit of a crossroads. Before departing for Ohio State, Bjork oversaw the hiring of new football coach Mike Elko, who has seemed a popular hire among fans.

Expectations are high in College Station, but Alberts’ track record has shown he’s willing to spend plenty of money on upgrades and NIL initiatives.
