‘It Was Fun While It Lasted’ — CFB Fans React as Steve Sarkisian Confirms That Texas Will Not Hold a Spring Game in 2025

Texas won't host a 2025 spring game, sparking debate among CFB fans. Sarkisian's move may aim to prevent player poaching amid NIL and transfer portal changes.

The Texas Longhorns have been among the most prominent college football teams for the past few seasons. The Longhorns have had great success with head coach Steve Sarkisian at the helm.

They have reached the college football playoff semifinals two seasons in a row. Despite that success, Sarkisian revealed on Thursday, Feb. 20, that the Longhorns will not host a spring game this year.

CFB Fans React to News That the Texas Longhorns and Steve Sarkisian Will Not Host a Spring Game in 2025

With the announcement that the Longhorns would not host a spring game this season, Sarkisian explained that Texas is taking a different approach with its offseason training program. Texas is not the only team that has taken this approach. The USC Trojans also canceled their spring game. This announcement drew several strong reactions from college football fans.

“Sad. RIP college spring games. It was fun while it lasted,” one fan wrote.

“Not going to let guys showcase so others can come offer the bag. I don’t blame him this will probably be the norm,” one fan commented.

“Coach Matt Rhule out here telling everyone the way CFB is going then you have the haters hating on him, he’s proven right again and the haters don’t dare to apologize,” one fan added.

Fans continued to share their opinions on X.

“Damn Sark what’s your problem. Now it’s gonna become a thing across all of college football,” one fan wrote.

“Ridiculous. Play the damn game and get live reps with a crowd in, have fun. Schools are going to poach your players just like you will poach there’s regardless if you play the spring game or not. They know who can ball,” one fan commented.

“Transfer portal and NIL (to a very high degree) is going to completely ruin college football,” one fan added.

Fans speculate that part of the reason Steve Sarkisian is choosing not to host a spring football game is so teams do not get a good look at his players in the spring.

With the introduction of NIL and increased use of the transfer portal in recent years, it is more dangerous for teams to allow other teams’ scouts to see their players publicly. If they do, there is a chance that a team will try to poach one of their players with a large NIL offer.
