South Carolina’s defense is facing a tough road in 2025. The team lost some of its top-tier leaders to the NFL Draft, and that’s a hard hit to recover from. Last season, their defense was one of their biggest strengths. It helped them finish with a strong 9-4 record—their best season since 2017.
While the unit performed well last season, finishing 11th in scoring defense and 16th in total defense, the team is now in a transition phase, trying to rebuild. With several key players departing after the NFL Draft exodus, the Gamecocks are searching for the next wave of leaders to step up. In this situation, head coach Shane Beamer is feeling the pressure, which he admitted in a recent interview.

Shane Beamer Addresses South Carolina’s Leadership Crisis Ahead of 2025 Season
South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer has voiced his concerns about the leadership void within the team following the NFL Draft departures of several key players. With the 2025 season approaching, Beamer acknowledges that replacing leadership on defense is his biggest concern.
“[Defense] is my biggest concern I have right now,” Beamer told ESPN’s Greg McElroy. “I knew that we were gonna be better in 2024 because of our leadership, particularly on our defense. My biggest concern as we go into 2025 is replacing that leadership.”
Head coach Shane Beamer’s concern is quite clear and understandable. The Gamecocks saw defensive players like safety Nick Emmanwori (35th overall), defensive tackle T.J. Sanders (41st overall), linebacker Demetrius Knight Jr. (49th overall), and edge rusher Kyle Kennard (125th overall) drafted to the NFL. These were all key players who have now left the team, and the head coach is feeling the leadership void on a high note.
He’s not saying the cupboard is empty. Far from it. Beamer praised players like DQ Smith, who’s about to start his fourth year at safety. He added, “Jalon Kilgore and Judge Collier are multi-year starters for us now. Nick Barrett’s a guy who’s a fifth year in our program but now he’s in a position to be the old guy on defense. He’s made of the right stuff.”
Beamer also reflected on past leadership examples, citing Roquan Smith and Nick Chubb from his time at Georgia. He explained that leadership isn’t just about being vocal but about setting an example through work ethic and consistency.
“We certainly have capable guys but you try to put them in as many situations and environments that you can to help facilitate and develop that leadership a little bit quicker,” Beamer said. “Now the summertime’s coming up and it’ll be a critical summer for our guys on offense and defense to really see who can take charge of this team and be the leaders that we need them to be.”
However, South Carolina has made a few additions through the transfer portal. Still, head coach Shane Beamer isn’t fully confident about these new faces just yet. They haven’t proven themselves on the field, and that makes it hard to predict how they’ll perform when it matters.
The real test will come soon. South Carolina is set to open the 2025 season against Virginia Tech on August 31. That game will reveal a lot. Beamer will finally see if his new roster is ready to compete or if the team is heading toward another tough season.
