Michigan Avoids Massive Recruiting Blow as HC Sherrone Moore Retains Key Staffer Amid Departure Rumors

In today’s day and age of college football, every program needs to have a great general manager. With the world of NIL taking college athletics by storm, a general manager can help a program navigate and recruit players at a high level.

Sean Magee, who is the current general manager for Michigan football, is one of the best in the country and has been instrumental in the Wolverines’ recent recruiting success, including landing five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood. Despite rumors that Magee could be leaving Michigan, it appears that he will now be staying with the Wolverines.

Sean Magee to Remain as the Michigan General Manager

Throughout the offseason, Sean Magee was rumored to potentially leave Michigan for the athletic director role at his alma mater, Navy.

Despite the rumors, On3’s Michigan insider, Chris Balas, reported that Magee will be staying put at Michigan for the foreseeable future.

This is a big-time win for the Wolverines, who fell behind in NIL funding when it first became legal. Ever since Magee was brought in, Michigan has turned its NIL program around and allowed the Wolverines to compete on the recruiting trail at a high level.

In just his first season as the Wolverines’ general manager, Magee brought in the best recruiting class Michigan has had since 2017. That kind of spark on the recruiting trail helps Michigan compete with teams like USC, Texas, and Alabama, who have consistent success due to their NIL funds.

Sherrone Moore, who struggled in his first season as head coach, will need Magee to continue to bring in high-level talent to build a national championship-caliber roster like they had in 2023.

Not only does Magee provide the Wolverines a spark in terms of high school recruiting, but he also has helped Michigan improve its transfer portal results, as Michigan just brought in its best transfer class in program history.

It’s a big-time win for the Wolverines and should set them up for future recruiting success.

While this is a good thing for Michigan, it might just be a band-aid, as Magee is one of the most coveted general managers in the entire sport. We’ve seen general managers leave great situations before, as USC poached Notre Dame’s general manager, Chad Bowden, in early 2024, shortly after Bowden built a championship-contending roster for the Irish.

Magee will continue to be pursued by programs all over the country, and Michigan is going to have to do everything it can to keep him next offseason.
