The NFL has always been a league where certain positions are valued more than others. And when it comes to the cornerback position, it’s hard not to argue that they’re not getting what they deserve.
Recently, Sauce Gardner, one of the league’s top young cornerbacks, spoke out about the disparity in pay between cornerbacks and other positions like defensive ends and wide receivers.
Replying to a post on X about the highest-paid pass rushers in the NFL on a per-year basis, the New York Jets cornerback posted, “Can somebody educate me on why the CB market is significantly lower than DE/WR?”

Deion Sanders Says Cornerbacks Should Demand More Respect and Recognition
Gardner’s comments sparked a lively debate, with many weighing in on the issue. But perhaps the perfect response came from Coach Prime, who offered a passionate and motivational plea to cornerbacks everywhere.
Because the Dog corners need stand up for themselves and what they bring to the table or sit down and watch what’s happening happen! Yall need to Stand up Stand out and Believe in what u Possess. https://t.co/YOx2YSiCSZ

“Because the Dog corners need to stand up for themselves and what they bring to the table or sit down and watch what’s happening! Yall needs to Stand up, Stand out, and Believe in what you Possess,” Sanders posted in response to Gardner.
In other words, Coach Prime is saying that cornerbacks need to demand respect and recognition for their skills and contributions to the team. For too long, cornerbacks have been undervalued and underpaid despite being some of the most athletic and technically sound players on the field.
But why is this the case? One reason is that cornerbacks often don’t get the same level of statistical recognition as other positions. They may not record as many sacks or interceptions as defensive ends or safeties, which can make it harder to quantify their value.
Additionally, the cornerback position is often seen as more of a “shutdown” role, where the goal is to prevent the opposing team’s receivers from making plays rather than making plays themselves.

However, this doesn’t mean that cornerbacks aren’t just as important to a team’s success. In fact, a good cornerback can be the difference between a championship team and a mediocre one. Just ask any coach or GM, and they’ll tell you that a shutdown corner is worth their weight in gold.
So, what can be done to address this disparity? Cornerbacks need to start speaking up for themselves and demanding the respect and recognition they deserve. They need to show the league and their teams that they’re not just important but essential to success.
