‘Long Way to Go’ – Ryan Day Updates Ohio State QB Battle Between Julian Sayin and Co.

The Ohio State Buckeyes finished the college football season on top of the world, rolling through the playoffs and winning the national title game.

While Ohio State’s 2024 team was legendary, many of the Buckeyes’ best players will not return in 2025. The biggest question mark surrounding Ohio State’s squad going into next year is the quarterback position, and according to head coach Ryan Day, there still isn’t an answer.

Ryan Day Says There is a ‘Long Way to Go’ in the Ohio State QB Battle

Day updated the media surrounding Ohio State’s quarterback battle, saying, “Long way to go on it. Don’t have any evaluation on it now. Gonna be a big spring for those guys.”

The Buckeyes have three guys competing for the starting job next fall, and it appears that no one has stood out enough to Day.

The most obvious answer at quarterback for Ohio State would be Julian Sayin, who, according to 247Sports, was a five-star recruit and the sixth-best player overall in the 2024 recruiting class. Sayin would be a redshirt freshman, and if he’s as good as advertised, the Buckeyes’ offense shouldn’t see much regression from 2024 to 2025.

The Buckeyes could also turn to redshirt sophomore Lincoln Kienholz, who committed to Ohio State in 2023 as a four-star recruit. The South Dakota native has only thrown 22 passes in his college career but has had the most time under Ryan Day and knows what’s expected of him.

Finally, the Buckeyes could turn to true freshman Tavien St. Clair, who was rated as the fourth-best player nationally in the 247Sports 2025 recruiting class. While St. Clair doesn’t have the experience level of the other two guys, he could be the most talented. If he has a good spring, I wouldn’t be surprised if Day pulls the trigger and decides to start him.

The good news is that all three of these guys are incredibly talented, and no matter who starts for Ohio State next year, the Buckeyes offense should be in good hands.

Like Day said, it will be a big spring for all three of these signal-callers, and it’ll be interesting to see who comes out on top.
