‘Probably Gonna Make a Mistake’ — Cooper Manning Offers Insight on Raising Arch Manning in the NIL Era

Arch Manning is ready to start as the quarterback for Texas after spending two years as a backup behind Quinn Ewers, who is now entering the 2025 NFL Draft. During the two games he filled in for Ewers due to injury last season, Manning threw five touchdowns and won both contests.

In times when many players transfer to get playing time right away, Manning’s patience is rare. Even though he didn’t play much in his initial years of college, he’s now ready to headline the Texas offense next season with high expectations.

In light of this, Cooper Manning, Arch’s father, sat down on “The Dan Patrick Show” on Feb 4 and shared insight on his son navigating NIL and looking at the bigger picture:

“I think the best advice I can give is to look at the school, where you’re going to go, and where you’re going to be happy,” Manning said. “If money is dictating where you’re going to go for the next four years, you’re probably going to make a mistake.

“I always tell Arch, ‘where are you gonna be on Sunday nights when you’ve thrown three interceptions, you’ve got beaten by the cross town rivalry, your girlfriend broke up with you, you got two tests you haven’t studied for, it’s cloudy and you’re home sick. Where are you still gonna be relatively happy, and if you can figure that out, you’ve made the right choice.’ But I wouldn’t let a short-term dollar amount dictate a career.”

Now that Arch is projected to be the starting quarterback for the Longhorns, businesses are eager to sign him for endorsement deals. His NIL deals are already worth an estimated $6.5 million, according to On3.

Discussing his recent Red Bull deal with ESPN’s Marty Smith, the QB talked about why he wanted to be a starter before signing an NIL deal.

“I didn’t want to be the guy rolling in all this money when we have guys like Jake Majors who had 40 starts here and wasn’t making money,” Arch said. “I wanted to earn it, work hard, get to know the players, and earn my way up.”

Given Arch’s famous family background, he also has attracted plenty of attention which he called “undeserving” and hoped that “it gets more deserving in the next few months.”

Talking about the same with Dan Patrick, Arch’s father said:

“Sometimes going through a little hardship and some bumps in the road are good. Arch is gonna have plenty more of those, you know, these are the real ones, when you get beat this year, throw a bad game.

“You know how they do it in the media — they crown you way too early and jump on and kill ya. He’s getting way too much attention and way too much credit, and he’s gonna struggle, and they’re gonna say, ‘He’s not as good, he’s overrated.’ It’s coming, everybody knows it, it’s kinda easy to see the writing on the wall.”

It remains to be seen how the 2025 campaign pans out for Arch but given that the Longhorns have made the College Football Playoff two times in a row, he is surrounded by a ton of great support.
