Paul Finebaum Sounds the Alarm on CFP Expansion—Why He Thinks It Could Hurt College Football’s Future

Another College Football Playoff expansion, which would add another four teams — expanding the field to 16 — is in the works, much to the chagrin of many fans who still haven’t gotten used to the 12-team format.

The proposal is backed by Big Ten and SEC schools after an in-person meeting, Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger reported. Power conference commissioners met in New York on Thursday, discussing CFP expansion, among other things.

Paul Finebaum is All-In on a Proposed 16-Team College Football Playoff

ESPN’s Paul Finebaum seems to be all-in on the potential of another four teams being thrown into the mix.

“I think there is (concern) but ultimately, Greg, we see this in the NFL and not one less person watches the playoffs,” Finebaum said on the “McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning” show. “In fact, significantly more people at times, maybe one and a half to two times the amount.”

While viewership won’t be the only factor considered in the expansion of the CFP, the potential for extra money from a TV deal will certainly be considered. Finebaum also doesn’t think people will not watch in protest — instead, he thinks people will watch the games based on whether or not they care.

“People will watch games based on what their value is,” Finebaum said. “That game is going to be better in December than it was perhaps in November, depending on the matchup because of the obvious outcome. I don’t think that’s a big deal.

“Really I don’t think because a game was played in October or on Nov. 7 in Baton Rouge or Tuscaloosa is going to stop one person from caring about it considering what happens to the winner and, ultimately, the loser.”

Ultimately, the appeal of the CFP being a win-or-go-home event will bring in the eyeballs it deserves.
