Paul Finebaum Sees Florida QB DJ Lagway as a Star, but Warns of a Major Roadblock

Despite the difficult schedule ahead of the 2025 Florida Gators, ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum has optimism for sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway. Finebaum has shown reverence for Lagway in the past, saying he could be in line for the Heisman Trophy if he lives up to his expectations.

Paul Finebaum Thinks QB DJ Lagway Can Be a Star for Florida

On Sunday’s airing of the “Paul Finebaum Show,” the namesake spotlighted the Gators’ tough schedule but said Lagway could be the key to success.

“I think the question is how good,” Finebaum said. “Lagway is exceptional. The schedule is exceptionally difficult. I think ultimately that’s the problem.”

Florida will take on an astonishingly difficult slate of SEC games in 2025, including home games against Texas, Tennessee, and Florida State, away games at Louisiana State, Texas A&M, and Ole Miss, and a neutral site game in Jacksonville against the Georgia Bulldogs.

The team will also travel to Miami in an out of conference matchup.

Finebaum predicts a Heisman Trophy for Lagway

Finebaum is not one to back away from bold preseason predictions, and he was not shy about his expectations for Lagway.

On a February episode of the “Paul Finebaum Show,” he opined about the potential of the sophomore.

“To win the Heisman, you obviously need a great year,” Finebaum said. “But, your team needs to be in contention. You don’t have to win … If Florida is really good and rolling along in November, in position to maybe get to the playoff, then I think he could have a chance. He’ll play in enough marquee games.”

As a true freshman, Lagway appeared in twelve games and started seven for Florida while sixth-year Graham Mertz struggled with injury. He led the team to a 6-1 record, completing 59.9% of his passes for 1,915 yards, 12 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He added 101 yards on 51 rushing attempts.

If Lagway struggles against the top tier competition, Florida head coach Billy Napier will have options. Four-star recruit Tramell Jones Jr. is likely to be the backup for the Gators, and will be awaiting his chance to see the field.
