Arkansas vs. Oklahoma State Game Preview

Optimism is high for both programs after winning big in Week 1. Oklahoma State is preparing to make a title run in the Big 12 as an outside favorite and proved capable after beating a South Dakota State program that has won back-to-back FCS national championships. Meanwhile, Arkansas is looking to rebound from a 4-8 campaign in 2023. The Razorbacks got off to an emphatic start with a 70-0 dismantling of Arkansas Pine Bluff that saw new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino amass 687 yards for the game.

The Cowboys return elite rusher and potential Heisman candidate Ollie Gordon who rumbled for 146 yards and three touchdowns against NDSU. Gordon has rushed for more than 100 yards in 10 of the past 12 games and scored 21 touchdowns in 2023, making him a significant threat to the Razorback defensive unit.

Defensively, the Cowboys saw a stellar output from safety Trey Rucker as he led all Power Four players with 15 tackles. Collin Oliver will provide the pressure when Arkansas decides to pass, he had five hurries and a sack against the Jackrabbits. Linebacker Nick Martin and cornerback Korie Black are two other names to watch for in the backfield as the Cowboys look to control a razor-sharp Arkansas offense.

A new-look offense proved highly capable in Week 1 as transfer quarterback Taylen Green looked dazzling with four total touchdowns. Green joins transfer Ja’Quinden Jackson as the new teammates led an offensive output that scored 28 points in the first quarter. Jackson had 101 yards on just eight carries, and while duplicating that output may not be feasible, Jackson should see plenty of action on Saturday.

The Hogs are led defensively by preseason All-SEC selection Landon Jackson. The defensive lineman had two hurries and a tackle for loss as Arkansas posted their first shutout since 2018. His mate on the defensive line, Nico Davillier, led all players with five total tackles, and the Hogs allowed just 23 yards on the ground.

This matchup has the potential to be an early season favorite, as the phrase “styles make fights” applies here with two teams that want to run the ball. The home-field advantage for the Cowboys will be a factor as Boone Pickens Stadium can be intimidating, and with two offenses that showed potent output last week, it could be the defense that forces the most turnovers that wins the game. For those who love a good ground game, this will be a must-watch affair.
