Vikings Trade Rumors: Minnesota Expected To Pursue Veteran QB Following Carson Wentz Injury, per Insider

J.J. McCarthy is expected to return to starting duties this weekend, after spending six weeks in rehab. This couldn’t come at a better time, as backup Carson Wentz just suffered a season-ending injury during Week 9’s defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers. Wentz suffered a dislocated shoulder that included a torn labrum and fractured socket, which requires surgery.

However, it seems that despite McCarthy’s return to the starting lineup, the Vikings don’t feel comfortable not bringing in at least one more quarterback to their roster. According to some reports, including those from Adam Schefter, they would find comfort in having at least one other veteran signal-caller on their roster.

At the moment, they only have J.J. McCarthy and Max Brosmer. It makes sense for them to want another quarterback on their roster, considering that McCarthy is also going through his own injury issues. Any problem with him could mean they would be down to their QB3 as the starter for the rest of their season.

The Vikings had Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones on their roster last year, but they didn’t re-sign either of them in the offseason.

Top 3 Candidates Vikings Could Target

#3 Russell Wilson – New York Giants

Wilson started the season as the starter for the Giants, but was quickly benched after three games following a string of defeats. It seems like rookie Jaxson Dart is cemented as the franchise’s starter, and considering they spent a tenth overall draft pick on him, he looks like a long-term investment. Wilson didn’t look terrible when he had the starting job (He looked terrible against Washington and Kansas City, but great against Dallas), and at 36, he should have a couple of seasons left in the tank.

#2 Jameis Winston – New York Giants

If one team has plenty of starting experience in its quarterback room, it is the New York Giants. Currently, their QB2 is former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston. Winston is significantly younger than Russell Wilson, at 31, and he was a starter just last year. He could arguably be the easier asset to get from the Giants, also.

#1 Kirk Cousins – Atlanta Falcons

This one is the possibility that immediately came to everyone’s mind. Cousins was the starter for the Vikings for five and a half seasons, and was with them until recently in 2023. He had a fairly successful stint, earning three Pro Bowl selections in the process. Currently he’s backing up Michael Penix Jr. at Atlanta, but he has the single most important characteristic to arrive halfway through the season at Minnesota: He knows the system the play.
