Matt Nagy is once again at the front of a head-coaching cycle. His work in Kansas City has placed him in the center of major hiring discussions, and this offseason may be the one where another team hands him the reins.
The league is preparing for a busy carousel, and several coordinators have built strong enough resumes to make the jump. The current market leans heavily toward offensive minds, but a few defensive leaders have positioned themselves well, too.
These are the assistants most ready to step into the big chair based on performance, scheme, leadership value, and the openings expected across the league.
Matt Nagy – Chiefs Offensive Coordinator
Nagy’s return to Kansas City in 2022 has rebuilt his reputation. The offense continues to operate at a high level under his structure, and he carries the advantage of previous head-coaching experience (Chicago Bears). Teams with young quarterbacks will see him as a safe, stabilizing hire.
Joe Brady – Bills Offensive Coordinator
Brady has revitalized Buffalo’s offense. Josh Allen’s efficiency spike under his system has not gone unnoticed. His ability to modernize passing concepts makes him one of the cycle’s cleanest offensive fits.
Kliff Kingsbury – Commanders Offensive Coordinator
Kingsbury helped unlock Jayden Daniels and pushed Washington’s offense into one of its most productive stretches. His experience as a former NFL head coach (Cardinals) and his strong QB development track record keep him on every shortlist.
Arthur Smith – Steelers Offensive Coordinator
Smith’s run-game creativity and experience guiding veteran quarterbacks continue to appeal to teams seeking structure. His tenure in Atlanta wasn’t perfect, but he operates well in disciplined, physical environments.
Brian Flores – Vikings Defensive Coordinator
Flores has rebuilt defenses before, and Minnesota’s aggressive identity is tied directly to him. Teams needing a culture reset value his presence and his ability to design pressure-heavy, adaptable schemes. His head coaching tenure in Miami also boosts his chances.
Vance Joseph – Broncos Defensive Coordinator
Joseph led a strong defensive resurgence in Denver. His experience as a former head coach with the same team, back in 2017, gives him immediate credibility. He’s viewed as a steady hand capable of lifting a young roster.
Steve Spagnuolo – Chiefs Defensive Coordinator
Spagnuolo is always on the fringe of head-coaching conversations. His postseason resume alone gives him weight. He represents the veteran option for teams that want stability over experimentation.
Lou Anarumo – Colts Defensive Coordinator
Anarumo’s reputation as a master of second-half adjustments remains strong. He continues to elevate defenses without elite star power, and organizations appreciate his calm, detailed approach, especially those who are on the lookout for their next head coach.
Todd Monken – Ravens Offensive Coordinator
Monken’s system thrives on rhythm, spacing, and quarterback versatility. His success with Baltimore’s attack has positioned him well for interviews, especially with teams seeking to merge mobility and structure at QB.
Ejiro Evero – Panthers Defensive Coordinator
Evero’s defenses play hard and remain technically sound despite roster inconsistencies. His communication skills and tactical clarity have made him one of the league’s most respected defensive minds.
Frank Smith – Dolphins Offensive Coordinator
Smith’s role in Miami’s explosive offense has made him a popular candidate. He manages complex spacing concepts and has helped elevate multiple players across the system. Teams looking for speed-driven attacks consider him a prime option.
It’s safe to say that the league is spoilt for choice with so many great options available. There are assistant coaches, even outside of the top 11, who hold a lot of credibility and potential to guide a franchise. It’ll be interesting to see who gets picked first from the above lot.
