The San Francisco 49ers are one of the most famous franchises in global sports. Their logo is recognizable to those who are not interested in professional football. With names like Jerry Rice, Joe Montana, Steve Young, and so many more to their credit, one may wonder where and how the journey began for new starting running back Jordan Mason.
Where Did Jordan Mason Go to College?
Hailing from Gallatin, Tennessee, Jordan Mason spent his college years at Georgia Tech from 2017 to 2021. Mason starred with the Yellow Jackets, putting forth a dominant display of his dual-threat abilities throughout his career.
However, Mason’s final two seasons were derailed by spotty play and injury, limiting his draft stock and his overall impact on the game.
Through his four seasons in Atlanta, Mason scored 17 total touchdowns on the ground and one through the air, reaching a total of 2,349 rushing yards and another 197 through the air. Mason broke out in his true freshman season, scoring seven touchdowns on the ground and averaging 6.1 yards per carry.
He followed that up with a dynamic sophomore season that saw him touch the rock 179 total times and score seven touchdowns once again.
The final two seasons of his Georgia Tech career, however, were nothing like his first two. After COVID-19 shortened the 2020 season to just six games for him, he was able to get back to full health and solid form in his senior season, but saw career lows in total touches per game as he split time in the backfield with now-Detroit Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs.
Jordan Mason’s Combine Performance Solidifies His Status
Despite a strong pre-draft performance, Mason went undrafted in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Mason ran the 40-yard dash in 4.58 seconds, tipping the scales at 5’11” and 223 pounds. His athleticism drills were also solid, and the 49ers ultimately signed him as a potential spell option out of the backfield behind Christian McCaffrey.
He scored his first touchdown of his NFL career in Week 17 of his rookie season and has played spot duty, but averaged a very similar 5.6 yards per carry that he averaged over his college career.
