Nebraska QB Jeff Sims to Enter the Transfer Portal

Jeff Sims is back in the transfer portal after announcing his intentions to transfer from Nebraska following a below-average 2023 season.

The college football transfer portal got a bit deeper at the quarterback position on Wednesday. Former Nebraska and Georgia Tech QB Jeff Sims announced his intentions to enter the portal in a decision that likely doesn’t come as a surprise.

Sims enters the fall portal window that has already seen no less than 120 quarterbacks test the open waters this offseason.

Jeff Sims to Enter Transfer Portal

Jeff Sims is arguably one of the most talented quarterbacks in college football. At least by athleticism rankings, that is.

Sims struggled during his time at Nebraska despite some lofty preseason expectations with him under the tutelage of Matt Rhule. Now, Sims is set to transfer once again, just a season after he transferred in from Georgia Tech.

Sims threw for just 282 yards and a touchdown in his five games with the Cornhuskers this past season. He added a whopping six interceptions as it was clear the offensive scheme under Rhule just didn’t quite fit his skill set.

In four seasons as a college quarterback, Sims has thrown for 4,746 yards and 31 touchdowns against 29 interceptions. He’s run for 1,335 yards and 12 scores, including Nebraska’s first touchdown against Colorado in an early-season highly-anticipated matchup.

He’s a dominant athlete, one of the fastest quarterbacks we saw in 2023, and he certainly has some of the most power and zip behind his throws. But Sims was plagued with decision-making errors and trusting that arm talent far too much in what should have been an easy offense for him to grasp.

Now, he’ll test the open waters of the college football transfer portal, hoping to find a scheme that fits his talent in 2024.

Sims is absolutely a raw talent at this stage of his career but should be a name for both a comeback player of the year (if college football had such an award) and a potential NFL Draft pick because of his talent and tools.

Finding the next step on his journey and returning to the roots that saw him flash some elite downfield accuracy and touch as he did that freshman season back at Georgia Tech could absolutely put Sims back on the map.

The decision for Sims to leave Nebraska shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, especially after the Cornhuskers have been linked to multiple quarterbacks in the portal, namely former Ohio State QB Kyle McCord.
