“Lame”, “Love it”: Fans Divided As NASCAR Releases First Look Of San Diego Street Course At Naval Base Coronado

NASCAR is set to host the inaugural Cup Series race at the Coronado Street Course later this month on Sunday, June 21. The Craftsman Truck Series race and O’Reilly Series race will also take place the same weekend. The stock car association released the first look of the street course on social media on June 9, and fans were left divided.

With the Chicago street circuit removed from the 2026 NASCAR calendar, the association replaced it with a first-of-its-kind street race on the Naval Base Coronado. On July 23, 2025, a street race at the Naval Air Station North Island was confirmed.

Virtual renders of the street course and a track map were eventually released, and now NASCAR has released the first look of the San Diego street course.

In collaboration with online racing simulator iRacing, a video of a NASCAR car lapping the street course was uploaded on social media. The video not only showcased what the circuit would be like to drive, but also the area surrounding the circuit.

The circuit will be available on iRacing starting June 9, 2026, as the caption of the social media post read,

“Your first look at the @Qualcomm Circuit at Naval Base Coronado! Arriving today on @iRacing. 👀”

The NASCAR fans were left divided as the first look of the Street course at Naval Base Coronado was released. While some loved the layout, others pointed out the potential issue with it. Those who loved it wrote,

“Lots of passing zones i love it.”

Another commented, “I love it! Lots of huge places to pass.”

“Love it. Should make for some good racing,” mentioned another.

Others who weren’t fans of the layout pointed out issues like the length of the circuit and the barriers covering the cool stuff at the naval base.

“2/3 of the cool stuff is covered by wall banners. Lame,” mentioned a user.

Another wrote, “This track is way too long cautions are going to take forever.”

“An unnecessarily long lap,” commented a user.

The Coronado Street course is a 3.4-mile, 16-turn temporary circuit built on an active military base. It will be NASCAR’s first race weekend on a military installation.

The NASCAR race weekend at Coronado Street Course will be part of the country’s 250th anniversary celebration along with the IndyCar street race in Washington, DC. The San Diego-based technology company Qualcomm secured the naming rights for the street course in May 2026.

“The Qualcomm Circuit represents the future of motorsports — built with precision, purpose and performance in mind — all while paying tribute to the extraordinary history of Naval Base Coronado and celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States Navy. We are proud to partner with a San Diego-born global technology leader as we make history together on this remarkable stage,” said Amy Lupo, President of NASCAR San Diego.
