Michigan vs. Washington: How Many Times Have They Played, Historic Results, and More

    The next installment of the all-time series between the Michigan Wolverines and the Washington Huskies will happen in the 2024 National Championship Game in the biggest meeting of the two college football blue-blood programs.

    However, the two teams have competed in plenty of important games before. How many times have the Wolverines and Huskies played before, and who has the most wins?

    How Many Times Has Michigan Played Washington?

    When Michigan and Washington take to the field for the National Championship Game, it will be the 14th time they have faced off in the history of college football. The teams have matched up five times in Michigan, four in Seattle, and four at the Rose Bowl.

    Michigan has beaten Washington eight times. In contrast, Washington has beaten Michigan five times. The Wolverines won the first four meetings between the sides. However, since then, Washington has had the advantage, winning five of the last nine meetings.

    Washington didn’t get their first win over the Wolverines until 1978, when they won 27-20 in the Rose Bowl. The two teams have met four times in the Rose Bowl, with Michigan and Washington winning two games each in Pasadena.

    Washington only scored 10 total points in the first four games of the all-time series and zero in the first two games. The first-ever meeting was a blowout 50-0 loss in Ann Arbor in 1953. However, Washington didn’t fair much better a year later in 1954, with Michigan winning in Seattle 14-0.

    The 1993 Rose Bowl

    One of the most famous matchups between the two sides was in the 1993 Rose Bowl when Michigan defeated Washington 38-31. It was the second time in as many seasons that the teams competed in the Rose Bowl, and Michigan was seeking revenge after losing 34-14 in 1992.

    Both teams came into the game winning their respective divisions, and nationally ranked. Michigan entered the game ranked #7 in the country, while Washington was ranked #9.

    The game is written in Rose Bowl history as one of the best ever. There were six different lead changes throughout the game and it featured an outstanding performance from Michigan RB Tyrone Wheatley.

    The running back rushed for a total of 235 yards and scored three touchdowns. That game was also the last for Don James as the head coach for the Huskies.

    The last matchup was in September 2021, when the Wolverines defeated the Huskies 31-10 in Ann Arbor. Michigan stuck with their identity and won the game on the ground with RB Blake Corum rushing for 171 yards.
