On June 3, Dan Whitney, known as “Larry the Cable Guy,” hosted his annual Git-R-Done Golf Classic at Firethorn Golf Club. Since 2008, Whitney has been organizing this tournament and gala to support his Git-R-Done Foundation, which donates to several causes, including a significant contribution to Bryan Health.
Among the notable attendees was HC Matt Rhule, who shared a few words.
Matt Rhule’s Humorous Take on Coaching Trust
The Git-R-Done Golf Classic featured 120 golfers competing in groups of five, each with a celebrity player to add some star power. This year’s lineup of famous faces was impressive. It had five former Nebraska Cornhuskers football legends: Johnny Rodgers, Eric Crouch, Ahman Green, Grant Wistrom, and Neil Smith.
Nebraska’s HC Rhule also joined the celebrity roster. In a clip that quickly went viral on X, Rhule joked that you should trust him as a coach because he’s terrible at golf, leaving many to wonder if he was trying to excuse his shaky swing.
“Never trust a coach who’s a good golfer… so I am not a good golfer”

“I live by a mantra: never trust a coach who is a good golfer. So, I’m not a good golfer, but I’m out here to have fun…”
Rhule also shared that this summer is all about the players focusing on personal growth and development.
As the offseason progresses, ESPN has released its first Football Power Index (FPI) Top 25 rankings for the 2025 college football season, and the Cornhuskers are at No. 25.
The FPI, one of the most reliable predictors of team success, projects Nebraska to finish the upcoming season with a 7.5-4.5 record. The Huskers have a modest 1.5% chance of capturing the Big Ten title and a 10.3% shot at making the College Football Playoff.
Coming off a 7-6 season in 2024, their first winning record since 2016, the Huskers capped the year with a thrilling victory in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl over Boston College, ending an eight-year bowl drought.
The program enters 2025 with a nearly revamped coaching staff. Offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen will lead his first full season after joining in late 2024. On defense, John Butler was promoted to replace Tony White, who departed for Florida State. Meanwhile, Mike Ekeler takes over special teams after four seasons at Tennessee.
Nebraska starts the new season on Thursday, Aug. 28, facing the Cincinnati Bearcats at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

With Rhule joking about his poor golf skills but asserting his trustworthiness as a coach, the question is: can he back up his humor with wins on the field, just as Nebraska looks to prove itself in 2025?
