Mark Bowman, a five-star tight end from Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, California, announced his commitment to the University of Southern California.
The announcement, first via a striking social media post by recruiting insider Hayes Fawcett, made an impact in recruiting not just for the commitment itself but for the bold message Bowman delivered to fellow California recruits.
With USC already boasting the No. 1 ranked 2026 recruiting class, Bowman’s pledge further solidifies the Trojans’ resurgence under head coach Lincoln Riley.

Why Mark Bowman’s Commitment to USC Matters Greatly
Bowman, standing at 6’4” and weighing 230 pounds, the Mater Dei product is ranked as the No. 1 tight end in the 2026 class by On3 and ESPN, with the latter placing him at No. 24 overall in the ESPN 300 for his cycle.
His sophomore season stats at Mater Dei was really impressive: 32 receptions, 435 yards, and eight touchdowns, projecting his ability to dominate as a pass-catcher while also contributing as a blocker in one of the nation’s most competitive high school programs.

Bowman’s decision to reclassify from the 2027 to the 2026 class earlier this year only heightened the stakes for his recruitment, making him a top target for powerhouse programs like Georgia, Texas, Ole Miss, and Oregon.
Historically, California has been a hotbed for elite football prospects. Still, in recent years, many have left the state for programs in the SEC or Big Ten, such as Alabama, Georgia, or Ohio State. Under Riley, USC has prioritized building a metaphorical fence around the state, ensuring the best players stay home.
Bowman’s pledge is a testament to that mission, joining top California recruits like defensive back Brandon Lockhart and defensive lineman Tomuhini Topui in USC’s 2026 class. With nine of the Trojans’ 14 commits hailing from California, the program is sending a clear message.
Bowman’s Bold Call to California Recruits Echoes Loudly
In a post shared by Hayes Fawcett on X, the five-star tight end issued a rallying cry to other top California prospects.
“Come join the family. We are taking over the city! All of the talent that’s here, we gotta bring it to USC,” Bowman said.
He emphasized that this vision was a “huge reason” for his decision to commit to the Trojans over other suitors.

This message perfectly aligns with USC’s broader recruiting philosophy under Riley and general manager Chad Bowden, who joined the program after helping Notre Dame reach a national championship game.
Bowden has been instrumental in revamping USC’s recruiting strategy, focusing on a collaborative approach that prioritizes local talent while building a roster capable of competing at the highest level.
According to a Yahoo Sports report from April 2025, Bowden stated, “We want the very best players that are in this city and in this state to play for USC and stay home.” Bowman’s commitment and subsequent message amplify this ethos, potentially sparking a movement among California’s elite prospects to join forces in Los Angeles.
