Notre Dame has a lot to look forward to for the 2025 college season, and head coach Marcus Freeman has his wide receivers high on that list because of the potential of newly acquired wideout Malachi Fields.
Freeman spoke about the depth of the Fighting Irish at that position during an appearance on ESPN’s “Always College Football” podcast with analyst Greg McElroy.

When asked by analyst Greg McElroy about the growth in that position, Freeman praised his returning players at the receiver position in Jaden Greathouse, Jordan Faison, and Will Pauling before focusing on Fields.
“What I really like about Malachi Fields from what I’ve seen on film,” Freeman began, “is that when he’s one-on-one, yeah, we expect to make the play, we expect him to win.”
He continued, “But what I’ve seen in how the previous school utilized him is that they put him at the point of contact a lot of times. It shows me that the guy takes a lot of pride in blocking and doing a lot of things without the ball in his hands.”
Freeman also added, “He’s a high school quarterback, former high school quarterback, so maybe we can find some unique ways to have three quarterbacks on the field at once,” riffing on an earlier answer about employing offensive schemes with two running backs at a time in games.
Fields, who transferred from Virginia to Notre Dame for his final year of eligibility, adds a huge weapon to the team.

Clocking in at 6’4″ and 220 pounds, he’s regarded as one of the best collegiate wideouts by ESPN in the nation and had a solid 2024 season despite rocky performances from the quarterback while at Virginia, which include a four-catch game against the Fighting Irish for 81 yards.
Now, he’ll don the golden dome as he looks to become the next great Notre Dame receiver. His opportunity to do so will be in a big season opener against the Miami Hurricanes, a team he’s played against before.
