Maddox Kopp Transfers to Miami (OH)

Kopp, a big-armed quarterback from Houston, Texas, originally, has had a tough time finding the field to start his collegiate career. But that’s no indictment of his talent, and more so because of other outside factors.

After deciding to stay close to home and attend the University of Houston, the former St. Thomas High School standout understood his battle with long-time starter Clayton Tune was likely a losing one. With Tune returning in 2022, Kopp entered the transfer portal in November 2021 and ultimately landed at Colorado under then-coach Karl Dorrell.

However, as the Dorrell era unfolded with little success that led to his firing, Kopp stuck it out through the season and earned a start to close out a disastrous year for the Buffaloes.

In his lone start, Kopp completed 15 of 28 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown against Utah. Though an unimpressive statistical showing, that game didn’t feel as if the contest was ever too big for Kopp nor the moment too large.

The former standout from the Texas High School Football ranks hasn’t quite been able to showcase what made him such a sought-after recruit. At Miami (OH), he’ll battle it out with former MAC Champion Brett Gabbert, who himself flirted with the transfer portal earlier this offseason.

The RedHawks’ quarterback battle will be an interesting one to watch through spring and, ultimately, into fall camp. Is Gabbert promised the starting role just because of the length of time he’s been with the program? How does Gabbert’s entrance and withdrawal from the transfer portal influence the decision, if at all?

All questions we’ll get answers for soon enough, but one thing is for sure, the RedHawks have a few good options at the sport’s most important position.
