    LSU vs. USC Game Preview

Allegiant Stadium will be at capacity for USC’s maiden voyage as a member of the Big Ten. The Trojans — along with UCLA, Washington, and Oregon — joined the conference this summer after winning a share of seven national championships as a member of the Pac-12.

Last season, Lincoln Riley’s squad lost five of its final six regular-season games after reaching the Top 5 of the AP Poll.

Meanwhile, LSU — still a member of the SEC, in case you were wondering — has won 10 games in back-to-back seasons after hiring Brian Kelly. He’s the second coach in school history to accomplish that feat in their first two years with the program along with Les Miles (2005-06).

The Tigers were the only FBS team last season to rank among the top 10 in both rushing and passing yards per game.

Both teams will start the 2024 season attempting to replace star quarterbacks who were also the first two picks in the NFL Draft and the past two Heisman Trophy winners. Caleb Williams, now the starter for the Chicago Bears, won the Heisman with USC in 2022 before Jayden Daniels, now the starter for the Washington Commanders, won it for LSU last season.

This will be the third all-time meeting between the schools in football but the first in 40 years. LSU defeated USC 23-3 on the road in September 1984 after the Trojans won the inaugural matchup over the Tigers 17-12 in a 1979 thriller on the Bayou.

Anticipation for this contest might have started just over 20 years ago when these two teams were directly involved in the most recent split national championship in the history of college football.

In 2003, LSU’s victory in the Sugar Bowl made them the national champions according to the Bowl Championship Series (BCS), while USC’s Rose Bowl win was enough for the AP voters to view them as the national champs.

With the introduction of the College Football Playoff, it’s likely we’ve seen the last of split national champions for good.
