During the SEC championship game between the Georgia Bulldogs and the Alabama Crimson Tide, Kirby Smart exorcised his demons and finally won a game (28-7) against his former team. This guarantees Georgia a spot in the College Football Playoffs and also possibly eliminates Alabama from contention. However, the Bulldogs’ head coach was not very happy, but not with the result.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Bryan Fischer, during the postgame press conference, Smart told reporters that he is “very concerned about” playing nine conference games. He noted that this kind of schedule would be horrible for players.

Coming into the SEC championship game, two of Alabama’s most important players, running back Jam Miller and tight end Josh Cuevas, were listed as questionable and ultimately did not play against Georgia. Alabama also lost LT Overton to injury ahead of the game.
Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer discussed the various rotations he has implemented in light of the team’s injury issues
“We’ve rotated a lot across the board on our team,” he said. “Defensively in particular. So the guys that have rotated with LT, fortunately Qua Russaw, when you talk about the edge position, he’s played the last couple games. We’ll get more reps for him. He’s ready for it.”
A lot of teams came into their final games of the season with injury problems. Kirby Smart pointed out that a longer season could lead to more injuries, as was shown by Alabama. Before the game, the Crimson Tide had Kirby Smart’s number, with the coach famously struggling against his former team, whose lone defeat of the season came against Alabama.

Kirby Smart’s Georgia Also Had Injury Problems Before SEC Championship Game
As for Georgia, Kirby Smart was facing a few injury problems himself, though not as extensive as their opponents.
They were missing Drew Bobo, who got injured during last week’s win over Georgia Tech, as well as safety Zion Branch. They were also without wide receiver Colbie Young, running back Bo Walker, and tight end Ethan Barbour.
