Matt Wells has stepped into a unique opportunity as the Kansas State Wildcats’ offensive coordinator, inheriting a talented dual-threat quarterback in Avery Johnson, who has already made a significant impact.
With high expectations surrounding Johnson’s future, Wells did not hold back his praise.

“He’ll play on Sunday,” Wells said. “But he’s got a lot of work to do before then. He’ll be the first to tell you, and that’s not a negative thing. That’s a growth thing. We’ve got to continue to grow and push the limits for him physically. Keep gaining weight, keep getting stronger, but also mentally.”
Johnson took control of the Wildcats’ offense in 2024, stepping into a high-pressure role as one of the most highly-regarded recruits in the program’s history. In his first full season as a starter, he led Kansas State to a 9-4 record, culminating in a bowl game victory over Rutgers.
Statistically, Johnson impressed with 3,317 total yards, a 25-10 touchdown-to-interception ratio, and a top-45 QBR nationally. He also surpassed the previous school record for single-season passing touchdowns, throwing 25 to break Will Howard’s mark of 24.
Wells emphasized Johnson’s determination and work ethic. “This dude wants it,” he said. “We’re just going to fail our way to the top. We’re going to screw up sometimes, we’re going to mess up, and then we’re going to vow to never let that happen again and continue to grow.”
Kansas State Elevates Matt Wells to OC, Johnson Supports Move
Kansas State officially promoted Wells to full-time offensive coordinator after he previously served as co-offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach, and associate head coach. Johnson made his support for the decision clear through his Instagram activity, signaling his excitement for Wells’ increased role.
Taking over for former starter Will Howard, Johnson led the Wildcats to their third consecutive nine-win season. Now, with Wells calling plays, the young quarterback has an opportunity to refine his skills and elevate his game.
While Johnson is widely recognized for his mobility, rushing for 605 yards and seven touchdowns, his passing game remains a work in progress. Last season, he threw for 2,712 yards, but his 58.3% completion rate highlighted inconsistencies in accuracy and decision-making.

Despite those struggles, Johnson flashed his potential in a standout performance against West Virginia, where he came just two yards shy of a 300-yard passing game. He added three touchdowns through the air and posted an impressive 96.4 QBR.
Kansas State enters the new season with high aspirations, aiming for a playoff push.
