Joel Klatt Warns College Football Can’t Afford To Lose This Historic Rivalry

College football is one of the best sports in the world because of its history and tradition. So, if there is ever the possibility of a historic rivalry being taken away, that could really raise some eyebrows.

Joel Klatt Says Ending Notre Dame–USC Would Be a Huge Mistake for the Sport

While speaking on The Joel Klatt Show, college football commentator Joel Klatt recently chatted about the impact of potentially ending the Notre Dame-USC rivalry.

“We’ve had this series since 1926. That’s a hundred years. That’s a game we should have  in college football.”

Klatt, who has been around the game for a long time, going back to his playing days as quarterback at Colorado (2002-2005), knows the game better than most. That is why he is so fired up about this issue.

The Notre Dame-USC rivalry is one of the best, most historic battles in the history of the sport.

So, if there is ever the chance that this matchup could not take place, which may happen after the 2026 season, that would make a lot of people upset.

    History of Notre Dame-USC

The first meeting between these teams took place back on December 4, 1926, in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Head coach Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame won the last matchup, which took place last season out in Los Angeles. The Fighting Irish lead the all-time series 50-37-5.

In general, these teams are two of the most historic programs in the history of the sport. These schools have combined to win 24 national titles and 15 Heisman Trophies, which is absurd.

As Klatt is trying to illustrate, this rivalry cannot end because it is filled with so much legacy and winning.

Much like Ohio State and Michigan, Notre Dame and Michigan, Alabama and Auburn, and every other major rivalry that takes place from time to time, this matchup is a pillar of the sport.

A team from a cold college town in Indiana against a team from the bright lights of Hollywood is exactly the kind of battle that the sport needs.

It would be a shame if this rivalry were to be discontinued down the road.
