Joe Burrow Reveals His Path to NFL Started With Question-Filled Ohio State Offer in 2015

Joe Burrow may be one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL today, but he also used to be a basketball star in high school. This meant that he might have gone on to a different path in his life if it were not for one particular offer from Ohio State.

Netflix Sports has released a series of clips featuring Burrow talking about his past and his path to the NFL, as well as his sports career growing up as a dual-sport star. He also opened up about what led him to decide to stick to football even though he was considered a basketball standout as well.

“After my sophomore season of football, I got my first offer from my dad’s team,” Joe Burrow said. “I didn’t really know what that meant. I was like, ‘my dad’s team is offering me a scholarship because… it’s my dad’s team. Like I really didn’t put too much stock into that. But then I started getting a bunch after that.”

“And so then I kind of realized, ‘okay, I probably have a better chance of being a football player than a basketball player,” he added.

Joe’s dad, Jim Burrow was a defensive coordinator for the University of Ohio and was one of the earliest offers he received. He then began receiving even more offers soon after, and this led him to decide to focus only on football for college.

Joe Burrow eventually did not choose Ohio but Ohio State, though he was red shirted for his freshman year there. He played two more seasons with the Buckeyes before transferring to LSU where he won the Heisman Trophy. This could have been a much different path if he had chosen basketball or even stayed a dual-sport athlete.
