“A New Chapter” – Ivy League Breaks With Tradition, Joins FCS Playoffs in 2025

The Ivy League has long separated itself from the FCS Playoffs but will join the postseason party from 2025 onward after student-athlete pushback.

The Ivy League has made a stunning move, breaking with tradition and permitting teams to participate in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Playoffs in the 2025 season and beyond.

Ivy League Football Will Be Included in 2025 FCS Playoffs

The change comes after a year-long push by the Ivy League Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Football had remained the only sport that lacked the ability to compete for national championships; now, they will have that opportunity.

“The Ivy League prides itself on a storied tradition of impact, influence and competitive success throughout the history of college football,” said Ivy League Executive Director Robin Harris.

“We now look ahead to a new chapter of success and to further enhancing the student-athlete experience with our participation in the NCAA FCS playoffs. I want to commend the students on our SAAC for their thoughtful and thorough proposal as well as their commitment to the league’s legislative process.”

Not only will the league be eligible for an at-large bid, but the league’s winner will receive an automatic bid into the playoffs.

In 2024, the Columbia Lions, Harvard Crimson, and Dartmouth Big Green each received a share of the Ivy League title. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, “Over the next several months, the league will develop tiebreakers to determine how its automatic qualifiers will be awarded when there are co-champions in the future.”
