Austin Simmons’ Status Clouds Ole Miss Rebels QB Room Heading into Key Stretch

Austin Simmons suffered a injury to his ankle in Week 2 which led him to be limited in practise the following weeks. In his absence, Trinidad Chambliss seized the opportunity to start games with both hands.

The Ferris State transfer has brought a dual-threat dimension, aided the offense’s efficiency, and forced Kiffin’s hand in acknowledging a two-QB dynamic. Because of this despite being healthy, Simmons is no longer the QB1.

“Obviously, it’s abnormal that your starting quarterback got hurt and your backup quarterback comes in and played so great,” Lane Kiffin said on Nonstop, with Kirk Herbstreit and Joey Galloway. “And has done such a great job over these three weeks. So, we definitely learned that we have two really good quarterbacks.”

Talking about if having two good quarterbacks on the team feels problematic, Kiffin added:

“Yeah, it’s a great problem to have. I don’t know that answer yet because we’re not there yet. We don’t play this week. Austin’s still getting back to 100 percent. He was playing great when he got hurt. Even came in when he was still hurt and played and threw a touchdown in Arkansas the other week. So, it’s a really good situation to have.”

It remains to be seen if Simmons gets increased role within Ole Miss going forward.
