Oregon State University’s association with the beaver stretches back to 1916 when the school yearbook took the nickname “The Beaver,” which corresponded to Oregon’s classification as “The Beaver State” due to the animal’s historical significance in the region.
The beaver became the official mascot in 1952, with Ken Austin wearing the first Benny Beaver outfit made of shag carpet and papier-mache.

The first official Benny Beaver logo, designed by Disney illustrator Arthur C. Evans in 1951, stood in until 1998. In 2013, Benny had an extensive redesign in partnership with Nike, modifying his appearance to appeal to contemporary viewers.
Oregon State introduced “Junior Benny” in 2009, a younger version of the mascot dressed in a baseball cap and sneakers to attract younger supporters. Junior Benny is the face of “Generation Beavs,” the university’s kids’ organization, which promotes early relationships with the OSU community.
In 2017, a 7-foot-tall bronze statue of Benny Beaver was placed in the Valley Football Center lobby to honor the mascot’s lasting influence. Alumni, including Ken Austin, the original Benny, funded the sculpture, which artist Alison Brown sculpted.
Benny added a romantic aspect to his life when he proposed to his longtime partner, Bernice Beaver, during the halftime show of the 2024 football season’s final home game. The idea, made feasible by Washington State University’s mascot, Butch T. Cougar, pleased supporters and added a personal touch to Benny’s legacy.
