Ty Simpson, a former five-star recruit born in Martin, Tennessee, is pushing hard for Alabama’s starting quarterback spot. Simpson, a redshirt junior, has been with the Crimson Tide since 2021. During his time at Westview High School, Simpson shined as a quarterback, earning Tennessee’s Gatorade Player of the Year title in his senior year.
He was ranked the fourth-best quarterback in the Class of 2021. Recently, Wide receiver Germie Bernard noted Simpson’s notable “change of mindset” as he competes with Austin Mack and standout freshman Keelon Russell.

Germie Bernard Highlights Ty Simpson’s Transformation in Alabama’s QB Race
Bernard recently shared insights into Simpson’s improved mindset as he competes for Alabama’s starting quarterback role. Simpson, a former five-star recruit, is engaged in a three-way battle with Mack and Russell for the top spot.
Over the past two seasons, Simpson served as Jalen Milroe’s backup, with limited game-time experience. During the 2024 season, he played in six games, completing 14 passes for 167 yards.
“I think Ty’s mindset has changed…I think he has what it takes to get the job done.”

Bernard believes Simpson has matured significantly during the offseason.
“I think Ty’s mindset has changed a lot,” Bernard said. “I wouldn’t say a lot because Ty he’s been had a great mindset, and I think that he’s just really growing. He’s growing into more of a leader. He’s stepping up, and he knows what it takes. He played behind a pretty good QB. I think that he has what it takes to get the job done.”
Crimson Tide HC Kalen DeBoer Praises Simpson’s Growth Amid QB Battle
Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer recently addressed the ongoing quarterback battle, describing the position as one with minimal in-game experience.
“Probably the biggest thing is there’s just not a lot of snaps that have been taken on a college football field,” DeBoer said. “But I also feel like the skillset’s there, there’s very strong strengths that we have and excited about them being similar in a lot of ways.”
Despite that, he expressed confidence in the quarterbacks’ abilities, noting their strong skills and teamwork.
“Of course, everyone’s different. They’ve got the things that they bring to the table. But I’m excited about what they all bring to the table. Can’t wait to get back on campus here in February and work with them.”

Regarding Simpson, DeBoer praised his dedication and preparation.
“You certainly appreciate what he’s done. Just continued to work on what he can control, and that’s himself. Continued to build relationships to get ready for this chance that he has right in front of him. To not just step up as a leader because I think he’s been doing that, but to have that opportunity to step in and be the quarterback.”
Alabama’s quarterback competition also includes Washington transfer Mack and Five-Star Plus+ recruit Russell, who joined the team in December.
