The latest from Morgantown isn’t looking good. West Virginia’s quarterback Garrett Greene has been dealing with an upper-body injury since last week, and now, just before the game, his status took a turn for the worse with an official downgrade.
What Happened to Garrett Greene?
In Week 8, Greene and the Mountaineers put up a fight against Kansas State but ultimately couldn’t hold up against the Wildcats’ strong second half. WVU was forced to yield in a war of attrition.
Greene, along with starting RB Jahiem White and LT Wyatt Milum, all exited the game with injuries against Kansas State, though specifics were unclear at the time.
Head coach Neal Brown later updated fans, indicating he believed each was dealing with head injuries.
“We got a beat-up locker room, probably the most injuries I can remember in a first half,” Brown initially said.
It was later clarified that Greene’s injury was upper-body, though he remained probable to suit up against Arizona in Week 9.
Is Garrett Greene Playing Today?
Early Saturday morning, word came down that Greene is now doubtful to play against Arizona. Sources informed ESPN’s Pete Thamel that Greene’s status was downgraded, making it likely he’ll miss the game.
To make matters worse, the Mountaineers also downgraded Milum’s status to doubtful. Milum, considered a potential first-round pick by College Football Network, is among the top offensive linemen in the Big 12.

With Greene sidelined, backup QB Nicco Marchiol is expected to make his second career start for the Mountaineers.
Marchiol has appeared in 16 games, amassing 388 career passing yards and 228 rushing yards. The Mountaineers sit at 3-4 this season, with a challenging path ahead to reach bowl eligibility.
