Texas High School Football Coach with Five State Titles Announces Resignation

Jake Fieszel has had a legendary influence on the football program at Gunter High School. After taking over in 2007, Fieszel turned the Tigers into a dominant team, winning state championships in 2016, 2019, and 2022–2024, an incredible three-peat.

Under his direction, the squad won 15 district titles in 18 seasons and advanced to the state semifinals nine times in a row.

“After much consideration and due to family considerations, I have decided to resign as athletic director and head football coach at Gunter ISD, effective at the end of my contract,” Fieszel said in a statement to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. Gunter ISD will be free to proceed in a manner that best suits the district.

Fieszel’s influence extended well beyond the win column. Under his direction, Gunter created a culture of quality and cohesion that improved the athletic department, not just the football program. Fieszel’s teams were renowned for their hard-nosed, physical play on both sides of the ball, and he was known for his meticulous coaching methods and ability to get the best out of his players.

During Fieszel’s career, Gunter recorded 35 shutouts and limited opponents to single digits in almost half of his outings. The club was as dominant offensively, scoring 903 points in the 2023 season alone, which set a school record.

Fieszel coached many young athletes outside of the Xs and Os, many of whom went on to play football in college. At the Class 3A level, his program became a template for consistent success.

While Gunter fans are undoubtedly saddened to see their iconic coach move on, they also feel deep gratitude for what he’s built there. Jake Fieszel didn’t just win games; he built a program and a legacy that will endure long after his departure.

After Fieszel’s departure, there are large shoes to fill. Given the program’s ongoing success, Gunter ISD is expected to consider promoting from within to preserve continuity. Top coaching talent from Texas and beyond is anticipated to express interest in the role.
