Ed Orgeron Makes Major Admission About Coaching Future: “Don’t Need To Be A Head Coach”

Former LSU head coach Ed Orgeron joined Will Compton and Taylor Lewan in a recent episode of ‘Bussin’ With The Boys’ to talk about football and what lies ahead for Coach O in the future. Orgeron was the head coach for the LSU Tigers from 2016 to 2021 and led the team to a National Championship in 2019. However, so far, we haven’t seen Coach O on the sidelines for a long time.

So, does Coach O see himself coaching college football anytime soon? Will Compton and Taylor Lewan asked the same question, the answer to which can be pretty surprising. When asked about what was the perfect thing for him to do at his current stage of life, Orgeron replied,

“I talked with the Athletic Director at Arkansas one time, that was it. But I have not had a job offer that would fit what I want to do Now, I don’t need to be a head coach. I could be a defensive line coach or be a recruiting coordinator.” (1:15:00)

Coach O’s passion for being a defensive line coach comes from his years of experience playing and coaching in that position. He was a defensive line coach for Miami, Syracuse, New Orleans, and USC before heading to LSU. However, he also admitted that at this point, he would be okay being ‘done’ with this part of his life.

“But if it fits what I want to get done at this part of my life, I will take it. If it doesn’t, LSU was good to me. I don’t have to take it. So it’s still a work in process”, Orgeron added.

Ed Orgeron’s time at LSU was dramatic and brief. He arrived as the interim coach in 2016 and later got the full-time job. His best year came in 2019 with Joe Burrow at quarterback. LSU went 15–0 and won the national championship. The offense broke several records and changed how people viewed the program. After that, results slipped in 2020 and 2021. Off-field issues and staff problems also hurt the program. LSU and Orgeron agreed to part ways after the 2021 season. His legacy is a mix of an all-time great season and a fast decline.

Did Lane Kiffin Ask Ed Orgeron to Join LSU Staff?

Ed Orgeron also explained that while Lane Kiffin has spoken with him about jobs and asked his opinion on LSU, there has been no direct offer for him to join Kiffin’s staff in Baton Rouge. Orgeron said Kiffin previously called about bringing him on when he was pursuing another job, but at that time, Orgeron did not feel ready to return to coaching. In their more recent conversation, Kiffin asked what Orgeron thought about LSU, and Orgeron said he spoke very positively about the program, but the discussion never turned into a formal invitation for him to come back.

Orgeron added that he believes pairing Kiffin with LSU would be a good fit, but also emphasized that a head coach has to evaluate the situation and build a staff that works best for him. Kiffin has already chosen to keep defensive coordinator Blake Baker, who passed on a head coaching chance at Tulane and is now one of the highest-paid coordinators in the sport. Orgeron said Kiffin has not asked him to join the current LSU staff and that he respects that, wishing Kiffin success while also planning his own eventual return to coaching.
