The Miami Dolphins are in a pretty critical situation as they gear up for the 2025 NFL draft. Many high-profile athletes’ names are there, and among them is Josh Simmons. The recent mock draft from former Dolphins Executive Vice President of Football Operations Mike Tannenbaum suggests he could be a part of the team.

Will Dolphins Bet on Josh Simmons?

Tannenbaum, now an ESPN analyst, hints that Miami could select an Ohio State offensive tackle with its first-round pick. While Simmons showcases undeniable talent on the court, there might be some risks.

Simmons’ 2024 season was cut short due to a torn left patellar tendon. This injury happened on October 12 of the same year. The expected recovery time for such an injury is roughly six months. Therefore, this means he would only be cleared right around the start of team activities. While he has been making steady progress, the uncertainty surrounding his readiness for the NFL raises concerns, especially whether he will be at full strength in time for the season.

Beyond his injury, Simmons has a history of penalties that might be an issue for Miami’s coaching staff. Over 32 career collegiate games, he accumulated 26 penalties. A staggering 17 of those infractions occurred in his first season at San Diego State, where he played right tackle.

The same year, he struggled to transition to the left tackle position in 2023. Surely, this was a turning point in his career. Since moving to Ohio State, he has performed incredibly.

Simmons’ Strengths: High Potential with Questions Attached

Before his injury, he was considered one of the more promising offensive tackles in college football. During the six games he played in 2024 before going down. With that, Simmons allowed just one pressure on 152 pass-blocking snaps. In his overall collegiate career, he has logged 1,005 pass-blocking snaps while allowing only five sacks.

The Dolphins have multiple pressing needs along both the offensive and defensive lines. This also makes their draft strategy all the more critical. Miami has been connected to several other linemen in various mock drafts.

However, many analysts believe they will prioritize a safer pick. Nonetheless, the fact that Tannenbaum has linked Simmons to Miami suggests the team could be willing to take a chance on him.

Would the Dolphins be making a bold move that pays off, or would they be setting themselves up for disappointment? That remains to be seen. One thing is for sure—if Simmons ends up in Miami, all eyes will be on him to prove that he was worth the gamble.
