Colorado is recently coming off a highly anticipated Pro Day, which showcased some of their best players hoping to get to the next level, including Shedeur Sanders and the two-way player Travis Hunter. While it’s no secret how good Hunter is, there’s now one question remaining: What position will Hunter play when he reaches the NFL?
Some NFL teams reportedly believe that Hunter’s actions on Friday during the Colorado Pro Day indicated that he could have made his decision. He indicated that he prefers to be a wide receiver once he reaches the next level, despite excelling in both the receiver and cornerback positions.

Fans Debate WR or CB Payday After Travis Hunter’s Colorado Pro Day
During an appearance on SportsCenter, ESPN NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler discussed the whole situation in depth and whether Hunter could or should be a wide receiver or a cornerback. Fowler also discussed how Hunter could have indicated one way or the other.
“He had the streets buzzing with just the way he was moving around, the athleticism he showed as a wide receiver, and then, you know, talking to teams last night, they thought he was planting a seed that, ‘Hey, I want to be a wideout,'” says Fowler. “He didn’t do one back pedal yesterday as a cornerback, despite many teams seeing him as a cornerback above a receiver.”
Hunter is among the most unique and versatile college prospects to enter the National Football League in years. His ability to excel at wide receiver and cornerback in college left many NFL teams intrigued by how they wanted to use him. Not only did he play two positions, but he did so very well.
His two-way ability played a significant role in winning the Heisman Trophy last season. Despite not being the best at either position, he was in the top five in both. Hunter racked up 96 receptions as a receiver for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns. As a cornerback, he picked up 36 tackles, four interceptions, and 11 passes defended as a corner.
At Colorado’s Pro Day, Hunter ran routes and caught passes from Shedeur Sanders, who is also expected to be a very high pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Fowler noted that the NFL teams interested in Hunter are “grappling” with how they will use him on the field. Many are unsure whether to use him solely as a wide receiver or cornerback or use him in both spots in some way.
Some teams are even reported to utilize him primarily as a wide receiver while also using him as a cornerback on third-down situations. Regardless of the uncertainty, Fowler added that NFL teams “almost don’t care because he’s so talented and he’s going to be such a star in the league; they just want to get him.”
No matter how Hunter is used in the NFL, all signs remain pointing towards him being one of the top picks in the 2025 NFL Draft. In a recent Bleacher Report NFL Scouting Department mock draft, Hunter was projected to go third overall to the New York Giants.
Fowler agreed, saying that the Giants at No. 3 or possibly the New England Patriots at No. 4 are the “absolute floor” for where Hunter will wind up on draft night.

Obviously, the money would differ based on the wide receiver or cornerback position, with receivers earning closer to $40 million and cornerbacks earning closer to $24 million. However, this should have little influence on any team willing to draft Hunter, as Hunter has shown enough that he can excel in both.
