Could They Postpone the Sugar Bowl Until Friday?

Following the tragic events in New Orleans, could the Sugar Bowl matchup between Notre Dame and Georgia be further postponed?

Following the tragic events that unfolded in New Orleans as Louisiana ushered in a New Year, the AllState Sugar Bowl matchup between the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Georgia Bulldogs was officially postponed until Thursday, Jan. 2, 2025.

Is less than 24 hours enough? Could the Sugar Bowl be delayed even further? Some are pushing for a further postponement as New Orleans brings itself to terms with a dark day.

Attorney General Seeks To Postpone the Sugar Bowl Even Further After Tragic Attack

Originally scheduled to be the cherry on the top of a College Football Playoff triple-header on New Year’s Day, the AllState Sugar Bowl was postponed in the wake of a terror attack. With Bourbon Street an active crime scene, and authorities still following a number of leads, Attorney General Liz Murrill believes a further postponement could the best course of action.

“Not my decision, but I would like to see it delayed at least another day,” AG Murrill replied when asked if it was wise to go forward with the Sugar Bowl while being interviewed for an NBC News Special Report following the attack involving a Ford truck and a suspect who was later killed during a firefight with police officers.

“If they asked for my opinion, I would tell them that,” Murrill continued before praising the decision to not proceed with the event as planned on Wednesday evening.

“I think that it was a wise decision to delay it at least a day. This is an active crime scene, and they just finished removing some of the bodies, but they haven’t removed them all. I think we need to wait an extra day.”

Any further delay would have consequences for the rest of the College Football Playoff, with the winner set to play the Penn State Nittany Lions in the Orange Bowl on Thursday, Jan. 9 and already facing a shorter turnaround time than their opponent.

However, the Sugar Bowl Committee has made every decision regarding the Notre Dame vs. Georgia game in consultation with authorities on the local, state, and federal levels, with the safety of all involved as the overriding factor.

If they take the opinion of AG Murrill into consideration, we could still see a further postponement as New Orleans attempts to recover from this horrific incident.
