Former Clemson safety Andrew Mukuba is one of the gems of the college football transfer portal. According to the latest college football rumors, the Texas Longhorns look to have locked down the play-making defensive back, with Austin a likely destination.
College Football Rumors: Texas Longhorns Locking Down Andrew Mukuba?
Texas looks set to bolster their defensive ranks ahead of the switch to the SEC, with the Longhorns appearing to be the favorites to lockdown former Clemson safety Mukuba. Three of 247Sports’ college football analysts have placed a crystal ball — the recruiting sites prediction tool — for the former four-star defensive back to join Steve Sarkisian’s team.
Texas recruiting specialist Hank South was the first 247Sports analyst to predict that Mukuba will head to Austin, quickly joined by Chris Hummer and Matt Zenitz. According to South, the Clemson safety spent the weekend in Texas visiting the Longhorns.
However, college football rumors around the third-year standout have often been disputed by a source familiar with the situation — himself. On Dec. 14, On3.com’s Pete Nakos reported that Mukuba was visiting Texas that day, provoking a post on social media platform “X, formerly known as Twitter” that simply stated “No I’m not.”
Despite Mukuba denying that he was visiting with the Longhorns on Thursday, it very much appears like the outstanding playmaker is headed back to the state where he first earned his reputation as one of the best safeties in the country. A top 300 player in the 2021 recruiting class, he showed off his two-way skillset for Lyndon B. Johnson High School in Austin.
Committing to Clemson, Mukubu quickly established himself at the college level, earning Freshman All-American accolades from multiple platforms. He was also named ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year and was a semifinalist for the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award. Since then, he’s been a consistent playmaking force for the Tigers’ secondary.

After tallying 143 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 16 passes defended and one interception in his three seasons as a starter, it was anticipated that Mukubu would enter the NFL Draft. Instead, a journey that began in his native Zimbabwe looks set to continue in the state that became his home, with the college football rumors pointing to Texas being his home for 2024.
