The 2024 College Football Coaches Poll reveal was chock-full of the sport’s heaviest hitters, while the Group of Five programs were on the outside looking in with no members cracking the top 25. As Georgia, Ohio State, and Oregon occupy the top three, which Group of Five teams were disrespected the most by their omission from the Coaches Poll?
No Group of Five Teams in the Preseason College Football Coaches Poll Top 25
Last season was a solid year for the Group of Five, headlined by the Liberty Flames earning a New Year’s Six appearance in the Fiesta Bowl. While it may feel like the talent gap has shrunk between the Group of Five and the Power Four conferences, coaches around the country agree that the Power Four remains elite by excluding the Group of Five from the top 25.
Liberty went 13-1 last season, and the Flames are returning the bulk of that team in 2024, led by returning head coach Jamey Chadwell and seasoned quarterback Kaidon Salter. That level of retention after a successful campaign should land a team in the preseason rankings, but the Flames were left off the college football coaches poll.
Memphis head coach Ryan Silverfield is 31-18 in his first four seasons at the helm for the Tigers, including a 10-3 mark last year. Even though Silverfield is returning one of the nation’s best quarterbacks in Seth Hennigan — 3,883 yards passing and 32 touchdowns in 2023 — Memphis didn’t land in the top 25 college football coaches poll either.
Despite retaining most of its staff and roster after outplaying expectations last year, Boise State, Fresno State, and Texas State were also kept off the list. While the Bulldogs and the Bobcats capped winning campaigns with bowl wins, the Broncos secured a postseason berth — and win — despite a coaching switch from Andy Avalos to Spencer Danielson 10 during the season.
