Following their regular-season finale, the Colorado Buffaloes were still alive for a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game. However, head coach Deion Sanders wasted no time in recruiting after their 52-0 shellacking of the Oklahoma State Cowboys in Week 14.
Sanders made the bold claim that he’s going to hit the portal even more so than he ever has. But is that even possible?

Coach Prime Brazenly Claims Transfer Portal Prowess
“I’m hitting that portal like never before,” Coach Prime told reporters following Friday’s game against Oklahoma State.
But he wasn’t done there.
“I already hit it,” Sanders claimed.

The head man of Colorado made these bold claims after he was questioned about his special teams units from Friday’s outing. Coach Prime said he was set to handle the issue with kickoffs and touchbacks, indicating he’s targeting every area of the field through the transfer portal this offseason.
Famously, the Buffaloes have built their roster through the portal in the two seasons under Coach Prime. First, he brought over the majority of his stars from Jackson State for the 2023 season. Then, he brought in a plethora of portal athletes from all over the country in 2024.
In doing so, Coach Prime not only has the Buffaloes hot on the field, they’re hot in the recruiting arena as well.
Sanders secured the commitment of four-star QB Julian Lewis, triggering a slew of commitments from IMG Academy in the days after.
Currently, Colorado ranks 32nd in the nation in overall grade for the class of 2025 from 15 committed athletes. This comes after he ranked 22nd overall with just 11 total enrollees from the class of 2024.
But his claim of hitting the portal like never before is an interesting one.
Does Coach Prime mean he’s going to take on more athletes? Or does he mean he’s going to come away with the top-ranked portal players this time around?
He signed 43 athletes from the portal in 2023 for this past season and 52 in 2022 for the 2023 season.

There’s no denying the portal prowess that Coach Prime holds. But a claim as bold as that warrants some second thoughts.
And it should also scare some of the other coaches around the nation that are going to be recruiting the same athletes from the portal.
