Colorado Buffaloes dual-threat star Travis Hunter heard his name called in New York as the 2024 Heisman winner in December, joining the Rashaan Salaam (1994) as the only two Buffaloes to win the award.
While he was awarded the Heisman Trophy because of his excellence on both sides of the ball, the vote ignited online debates that Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, who had an incredible season with over 2,400 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns, deserved the honor more.

College football fans reacted to the tweet with mixed comments. One fan, in particular, felt perturbed that the organization needed to clarify its pick.
“I have NEVER seen this before from the @HeismanTrophy organization. Is this normal, to try and justify their pick? What is the motivation for this post?” the fan wrote.

Meanwhile, many fans agreed that Hunter truly deserved the award.
“Every award Travis received shows why he won every one of them is because of his stats no matter what people say. Congrats, #12, they will remember your name for sure, noe💯🙏😊” A fan wrote.
“Such a wonderful selection for the 2024 Heisman. Thanks for recognizing his impact on the field (and off) and giving him this honor. He truly is Him.” Another fan chimed in.
Others recalled his winning production, adding to the already lengthy list of statistics.
“Also, he only allowed 1 TD all season.” A fan noted. “Force fumble to win the game,” another fan wrote.
Hunter, who is an anthropology major at Colorado with a 3.789 cumulative GPA, was named Division I football’s Academic All-American Team Member of the Year after being selected as a first-team Academic All-American for the second time. He is now the third student-athlete at Colorado to earn the academic honor.
Regarding this, a fan posted: “Academic All-American at the same time. He is Him — and then some.”

What made Hunter’s win rare, though, was that he played both wide receiver and cornerback very well. Most Heisman winners are either great on offense or defense, but not both. Hunter’s production was similar to Charles Woodson, who won the Heisman in 1997 as a two-way player, but Hunter seemingly did it with more consistency.
As a wide receiver, Hunter tallied 92 catches for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns. As a cornerback, he was able to shut down wide receivers and make big plays on defense.
