On Tuesday, Dec. 31, the Miami Hurricanes fired defensive coordinator Lance Guidry. While the Hurricanes did not make the College Football Playoff, they did have a good season overall and finished the regular season in third place of the ACC with a 10-3 overall record. Furthermore, they had an impressive 6-2 record against fellow conference opponents.
During the season, the Hurricanes were averaging 25.3 points against per game, something that was 70th in the nation among all eligible programs. Following Guidry’s firing, fans on social media naturally reacted, with some apparently even surprised by the move.
Social Media Reaction to Lance Guidry Firing
Pete Nakos of On3 broke the news of the firing via X. In response, one user expressed their surprise at the decision to fire Guidry.
“Didn’t see this coming,” they outlined.

Another individual, however, took a much different tone and detailed how poor the defense has been this year in relation to others in the past.
“Worst defense in program history,” they stated.

Seemingly in agreeance, another social media user made clear that they believed the Hurricanes’ shortcomings this year were the result of the defense.
The defense was one of the main things holding them back so this makes sense.

Miami Hurricanes Future Outlook
As is clear, higher-ups at the university and the football program believe that the defense needs improvement next year. Still, that’s not to say that the Hurricanes’ defense did not have game-changing players.
According to Pro Football Network’s recent 7-round 2025 NFL Mock Draft completed by Jacob Infante, the Hurricanes had two defensive players who are projected to be taken in next April’s draft.
Despite Miami’s defensive shortcomings this season, Infante has Hurricanes EDGE Tyler Baron going in Round 5 (No. 149 overall) and defensive tackle Simeon Barrow Jr. falling to the early portion of Round 7 (No. 219).
On the year, Baron had recorded 5.5 sacks and one forced fumble, in addition to the 38 total tackles he had accumulated. Meanwhile, Barrow’s stat line was fairly similar, having totaled 5.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and 30 total tackles on the 2024 campaign.

The two players’ star power, however, was not enough, and the program believed that firing Guidry was the correct path forward.
