‘Variety of Feedback’ Around Draft Grade Led To Carson Beck Return to College Football

Carson Beck shocked the football world with his transfer portal entry on Thursday, but did draft grade uncertainty prompt his CFB return?

University of Georgia quarterback Carson Beck, who last week announced he would forego his senior year and enter the NFL Draft, has withdrawn his name from the draft and will instead place his name in the transfer portal.

Look for Beck to use his final year of eligibility at the University of Miami, where he is currently dating Miami women’s college basketball player Hanna Cavinder. The Miami Hurricanes also need a seasoned veteran signal caller to replace Cam Ward.

Beck to Enter Transfer Portal, Look for Miami to Be a Major Player

Last season, former Miami quarterback Cam Ward took the same route as Beck as he wanted to go to the NFL a year early. Scouts told him to stay in college one more year and now he will be among the top projected three picks of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Ward transferred to Miami and flourished. He will now be one of the top selections, if not the top pick of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Beck was reportedly told by scouts he needs another year of collegiate seasoning. He could do what Ward did and transfer to Miami, work under offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson’s Air Raid offense, and emerge as a first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

It just so happens Miami needs a replacement for Ward and is in the market for a transfer portal quarterback. It also doesn’t hurt Beck is dating Cavinder, who is a senior basketball player at Miami.

Could lightning strike two years in a row for Miami?

Beck, a two-year starter at Georgia, recently had surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow. He suffered the injury during the victory over Texas in the SEC championship.

Sources told ESPN the feedback he received from the draft process led to this decision. He changed his mind in the past 24 hours.

According to ESPN’s report, he received advice that if he could return and wanted to, he should probably return and play another season in college. This is music to Miami coach Mario Cristobal’s ears.

A source told ESPN Beck received feedback that he could end up anywhere through the third round. It would complicate matters as Beck would not be ready to throw until right around the NFL Scouting Combine in April. He will miss spring ball wherever he transfers, but he should be fine by summer camp.

Miami quarterback Emory Williams, who was supposed to take over for Ward, was awful in the Pop Tarts Bowl as he played the second half and could not move the offense. Miami is looking to upgrade the position with a polished veteran.
