Carson Beck Is Super Talentedbut Do the Miami Hurricanes Have Enough To Contend for a National Title?

The former Georgia Bulldog made national news when he declared for the 2025 NFL Draft, before changing his mind in a matter of days and transferring to Miami after four years in Athens.

Despite winning the SEC and heading into the College Football Playoffs as the second seed, Beck and Georgia suffered a 23-10 defeat at the hands of Notre Dame, ending their season quite disappointingly.

There are no doubts about the talent Beck possesses and that he could have gone to the NFL this year. In 2024, he threw for 3485 yards and 28 touchdowns with a QB rating of 145.3, slightly down on his 2023 season of 3941 yards, 24 touchdowns and just six interceptions.

Max Chadwick of Pro Football Focus believes that despite a slight statistical down year, Beck is one of the best returning quarterbacks in the country.

A lot of major contenders will be losing their QBs to the NFL this spring, potentially opening the door for Beck and Miami to make a push. Cam Ward is, of course, moving on from Miami, along with Shedeur Sanders of Colorado, Jalen Milroe of Alabama, Jaxson Dart of Ole Miss.

On top of that, Texas, Ohio State, Oregon, and Notre Dame all had their man behind center declare for the draft.

With the Canes adding Beck, they gain a huge advantage over those teams heading into the 2025 season. He has played in big games, something that many competing QBs will have to deal with in the moment. However, Tom Loy of 247Sports Ultimate College Football Show has questions around the Miami roster.

“Beck is talented enough but I don’t think he has enough weapons to truly compete for a National Title,” he said.

Though the offensive line is returning, impressive wide receiver Xavier Restrepo and tight end Elijah Arroyo will be joining Ward in Green Bay for the NFL Draft. Losing two huge pieces of the offense puts huge pressure on the newer players and Beck to perform.

On top of that, there are questions about the program and Mario Cristobal as head coach. Miami finished the season 10-3 with Ward throwing for 4313 yards and 39 touchdowns, but they missed out on the first-ever 12-team playoff.

With Ward arguably being the best player in college football for 2024 and the Hurricanes still failing to make the playoff, expecting Beck to do so would put huge amounts of pressure on him.

Miami is forever in the hunt, and adding Beck should play into their hands. He is more than talented enough to lead them and there are still solid weapons on offense.

However, defensively, the Hurricanes struggled in 2024, giving up 25.3 points per game. They did lead the country in scoring at 43.9 points per game but that will drop and possibly quite drastically.

Beck and Miami will be in contention for a spot in the playoff come season’s end. There will continue to be mixed reviews about him leading the team, but questions will be asked of Cristobal should the Hurricanes miss out on the playoff again.
